Heartwood Farm was born out of homesteading, tent-living days when Ash basketry was a primary focus. The term “heartwood” refers to the inner rings of a tree. The Black Ash, an essential species of Northeastern basket-weaving, has a heartwood characteristically darker than the surrounding sapwood. With simple tools, rings of the ash tree are pounded and peeled off the trunk to produce the splints that are woven into baskets.
Since 2010, Heartwood Farm has grown to include 6 acres of diversified produce, maple sugaring, education and craft. As we've expanded, our commitment to small-scale organic farming, food access, and traditional skills has remained at the heart of what we do.
